Best Oil for Briggs and Stratton, Vanguard Engines

To optimize engine performance, use Warranty Certified Briggs & Stratton Small Engine Oil. Briggs and Stratton offers a Synthetic 5W30 oil that provides the best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption. For optimum performance, you should change the oil in your small engine after the first five hours of use and then annually, or every 50 hours of use – whichever comes first.

Now, the different oil types can work best at certain temperatures. Let’s dive into which one to choose for your climate(s).

  • SAE 30 – Warmer temperatures, most common oil for small engines
  • SAW 10W-30 – Varying temperature range, this grade of oil improves cold weather starting, but may increase oil consumption
  • Synthetic SAE 5W-30 – Best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption
  • SAE 5W-30 – Very cold temperatures
  • Vanguard 15W-50 – Varying temperature range. For continuous-use, such as commercial lawn cutting or pressure washing.

When choosing lawn mower oil, use a high quality detergent oil classified as *For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ* or higher. Do not use special additives.

Best Oil for Honda Small Engines

With Honda engines, oil is a major factor affecting performance and service life. Use 4-stroke automotive detergent oil that meets or exceeds the requirements for API service classification SJ or higher (or equivalent). Always check the API service label on the oil container to be sure it includes those letters of SJ or higher (or equivalent). SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general use. Other viscosities shown in the chart may be used when the average temperature in your area is within the indicated range.

MMX Engines

With MMX (as any other engine), the engine oil affects performance and service life. Use 4-stroke automotive detergent oil. SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general use. Other viscosities shown in the chart may be used when the average temperature in your area warrants. The SAE oil viscosity and service classification are in the API label on the oil container. Use API service category SJ engine oil, or higher.
