The Mighty Mac® SC185E by MacKissic is a brute of a shredder-chipper, and that is why it is nicknamed the “Brute.” The Brute has a proven history of quality and performance. First produced in 1989 the Brute has gone through four model upgrades to today’s SC185E powered by Briggs and Stratton XR2100 professional series engine.
The Brute features a highway towable trailer for easy maneuverability. The shredder has 48 free-swinging hammers which produce over 114,350 hits a minute, pulverizing just about any organic material. The hammers can be reversed four times, each time providing a new cutting surface. The chipper has one resharpenable knife. The knife can be easily reached by removing the access cover. The SC185 has a centrifugal heavy-duty clutch for easy starting. Once the clutch engages, the dual belt drive system ensures consistent horsepower and torque from the powerful engine to the hammermill system. Unlike direct drive machines, the centrifugal clutch allows the engine to disengage when stressed under a heavy load. This allows the engine to gain RPMs faster and more efficiently pulverize the material.

After assembly I really put this chipper / shredder through its paces. The chipper devoured 4 inch diameter hardwood limbs with surprising ease. The shredder is also very effective but it does tend to yield larger fragments when you run twigs through... a few times I shoveled them back up and dropped them through the shredder a second time. Overall a ruggedly built and effective machine.

I have had for 1 season and so far, very happy. Easy to assemble and get ready to use. Chipper produces very nice chips. I will be changing my trimming style - no big Ys as they do not fit into the chipper, but if it fits, it eats it nicely. Shredder is very powerful. Will rip things out of your hand, so do not place things in - throw them in. Longer, greener sticks that are bendy will get jammed since they just wrap around the hammers. Clutch worked perfect, no damage to the unit at all, fairly easy to unclog. Agree with other reviews that having a smaller "screen" would be nice for certain brush to get it chopped more. Plenty of power in the motor, electric start is nicer than I thought it would be and worth the money. Considering how heavy it is, it is very well balanced and moves very easily by hand on smooth, flat ground (moving about in the shed, etc.).

I have worked with wood chippers for the past 40 years taking care of a 7.5 acre property full of vegetation of all kind. I do everything with it. Tree branches, vine, brush, leaves etc. I even produce all the mulch I need. The machines from Mackissic ( I owned three of them) are efficient, simple in design and require very little maintenance. I also own a big diesel chipper but it clogs all the time and you need a trailer to catch the chips. You don't run the risk of hydraulic fluid leaks to contaminate your property, or expensive engine repairs, and fixing this machine is like childs play compared to diesel wood chippers. You can compost anything with this machine. If you throw something wet inside, just have a few dry branches to throw in it and the whole thing does not block. All you need is a socket set and an adjustable wrench to take care of the whole machine. A small 8hp garden tractor will tow it no problem around the property. You don't damage the grass and you can sneak into tight areas with this chipper. Just leave the chips on the ground and you can use them for mulch. I even make wonderful mulch shredding horse manure with this machine. It comes out totally homogenized and looking like a million $. You really save a ton of money with this. Diesel wood chippers are very good at some things. The Mackissic hammer mill chipper/shredders are very good at everything. There is nothing it can't shred.
